Fighting climate change

  • One of the biggest problems our planet is facing is global warming. This is caused by too many polluting gasses such as carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere.
  • CO2 forms a blanket in the atmosphere which keeps the heat in. Although it might sound great to have warmer summers, it is actually very destructive to our planet.
Have a look at this Friends of the Earth link to see why.
  • A lot of the CO2 comes from burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas in power stations. Power stations are the largest contributor to carbon emissions, producing 170 million tonnes of CO2 each year.
  • In the UK we currently give out 560 million tonnes of CO2 every year. If we are to avoid dangerous levels of climate change we must cut our CO2 emissions by 80-90 per cent by 2050. That means producing our energy in ways that does not make CO2.
