Craigengelt Wind Farm

Scotia Wind Limited (SWL) is proposing a small scale wind farm on Craigengelt Hill. The proposed location is 10 km to the south west of Stirling and, approximately 3.5km east of the consented 'Earlsburn Site'. The site is approximately 85m lower than Earlsburn thereby reducing visual impact. In proportion to Earlsburn, Craigengelt will be smaller generating between 21MW and 24MW. This is enough to electricity to power 11,742 homes and preventing the release of 47,462 tonnes of CO2 per annum.

Why Craigengelt?

SWL is well aware of the sensitivities surrounding wind farm development and the need for a sensible and balanced approach to wind development. Several possible sites were considered within this region; however Craigengelt was eventually selected because:

  • It is the least visible site in Stirling and Clackmananshire and shielded by high ground on three sides.
  • The site is not within the Campsie, Ochill and Trossach ranges.
  • The site is within an area deemed by Stirling and Clackmannanshire Council as suitable for wind farm development.
  • The site has very high wind speeds, meaning a lot of electricity can be generated.
  • It is an area currently used for rough grazing only.
  • The impact on the environment and surrounding ecology can be minimised through careful turbine positioning.
  • The area is sparsely populated.
  • Easy road access can be achieved south from Stirling.
  • Grid capacity is available in Stirling via underground cable and is not dependant on the Beauly to Denny Transmission Line.
